I bought this to bath our mini show horses, we no longer have to fight with them up by the house, in the yard over grass, so we could have warm water for baths. They now stand still in the grooming area. MUCH more pleasant for all of us.

      About Me Horse Owner

Comments about Schneider Saddlery Insta Hot® Equine Portable Washing System:

We hooked the water up, turned it on, and water was spraying out everywhere from inside the machine, not the hookups. I took it apart and noticed that one of the brass cast parts was cracked, clearly from an over-torqued screw during assembly. We had a show the next day so I had to make a quick fix. I took it apart and epoxied the crack in the casting hoping it might last the show. I put it back together, hooked it up to water, and water was still spraying out everywhere. I figured it was from what I was just working on, but when I looked it was a cracked copper line. So that was two major defects in one machine. Garbage.

The system is pretty easy to use. Set up was a little difficult. I am really pleased to be able to bathe the horses with warm water (they are too!). Since the tank is relatively small you have to stop every few minutes to let the water heat again, but that works ok and you can focus on soaping up and washing in between the heat cycles.

We show mini horses & they hate cold baths, also have well water which can be pretty cold in early spring. Will this heat water to a comfortable temp for their baths, & stay warm for several (4) baths?

Yes ! This is a must for bathing your little show horses! The propane last a long time ! You can wash several horses and they are definitely very happy about not having freezing cold water on them in the spring and fall! Very happy with this product. I do recommend getting an extra shutoff connector for hose and your own sprayer.

The system works great.. instant hot water. The only issue is if it is in the wind, the unit blows out and you have to shut it off and turn it back on. If your in the barn, it's awesome. I give my yearlings hot baths before the sales and they never shiver or get cold.

Yes! This product is amazing! We washed several big horses and they were SO much happier! It great for in between seasons or is you have to rinse off show horses in the early mornings after the get their white legs green! We put an extra adapter on the hose and then a different adjustable sprayer on ours. Can't believe I went SO long without one! We washed several horses for a show and that included washing , conditioning and whitening. Propane last a very long time. You can always get a second propane tank but don't think you'll need one. They make them with regulators that show how much you have left or you can tell because the tank gets light.

It is "on-demand" hot water that heats as it runs with a setting for temp so as long as you use the outgoing water hose that comes with it and don't run the water too fast, you should have plenty of hot water.

I used my Insta Hot machine all last spring and summer. When I tried to use it a couple of months later, the water doesn't heat. The ignition clicks and I can hear it light and it has plenty of propane, but the water doesn't heat. The vent at the top still gets hot. I can't figure it out. Also, where can I find an online copy of the users manual?

Sorry I couldn't be much help. I would try a plumber or a fix it man as that who I used to install mine and he's been able to change out couplings that make it a little more solid.

The spray is equivalent to your hose pressure. Which is generally sufficient to bathe a horse. It is not designed to use as a pressure washer. There is no soap injection.
We have several of these units in each one of our barns. They heat well and and are economical as far as propane consumption.

The sprayer is strong enough for use on livestock, dogs, horses. We don't suggest hooking it up to a pressure washer since the water would get cold before it came out the pressure washer. There is no dispenser to add soap.

The spray is strong enough for horses. I wouldn't hook up a pressure washer as that would be very hard on the horses skin, there is mot a dispenser to add soap to it, but you can put a product like the horse wash that comes in a bottle to connect up before the spray nozzle. Warning: do not leave this out in below freezing temps, even drained as it will break the coils.

I haven't used it yet so I am not sure on the water pressure. As for the soap dispenser, I guess you could put on on the end of the hose before the end nozzle.  It does not have a separate area for soap like a pressure washer does.  As for hooking a pressure washer to it, the hose coming from the heater probably could be hooked to a pressure washer, but not sure if the heater could keep up with the demand of the pressure washer.  I did not buy it for that, but for washing cattle, horses, and dogs during cold and cool weather.

I find that the pressure is ok takes longer to get soap off but at least the water is warm. If you don't mind adding a few more minutes to your bath time then it's a great product if your looking for a quick bath then I would find something else with better pressure. Pressure washer I wouldn't but then again perhaps call the company as they would be better advisors for that. As far as attachments there is a twist metal nozzle that you can't attach anything to but you probably could try and fit something on the hose after removing the original nozzle or use a similar hose that is more compatible for switching nozzles. There is no place for soap unless u got a different hose and we those spray on soap products.

              Hello,
I had a problem connecting the regular water hose to the input pipe - I had
to buy an adapter. (I used the adapter that came with it for the outgoing
hose.) I only used it once to wash my horse. The water stayed hot. I
suspect the reason it comes with the hose for spraying is that it is a
narrower hose, less flow, and that means the water is running through it
slowly enough to warm up. I know one other person who had one in her barn
for years; I do not know of any problems.
Perhaps there is something defective about that specific unit?
              Good luck.

Glad to know I'm not the only one!! Yes I had this problem. I had mine mounted to the wall of the wash rack and despite a clear day it seemed that just someone breathing heavy around it the pilot light would go out. I had some metal panels made (old road signs) and placed on the sides. That worked for a while but still would go out therefore an additional panel was needed across the front linking the two sides essentially creating a cover around it to protect it from the wind. That seems to work well and we will c how that goes. Seems like the more protection from the wind the better! Good luck!

Also make sure that your water pressure knob and water temp knob are all
the way open as well as the propane tank knob. Hope this helps!

Can you see the flame in the three little tear drop window on the left front? I have two of these units at booth of our barns. The only time temperature is not consistent
is when propane is low. You will see very little flame in the window. Hope this helps.

            • A:

Sounds like the pilot light is going out. This happens to me if it is breezy in my barn. The breeze blows the flame out and then I have to restart the unit.  You might also check to make sure that the propane supply is working correctly. You can do this by hooking the supply line and tank up to a gas grill. If it's going out and not due to a breeze, I would return and exchange the unit for a new one. I just bought my second unit and couldn't get it to work for anything. I returned it to Schneiders and they sent a new one within a few days which worked perfectly.  Great customer service.

My husband gave me the Insta-Hot unit for Christmas and I was thrilled. Although I didn't need to wash horses, I did have nasty blankets so lined them up on the panel fencing to wash with hot water during the unusually mild weather last week. The connections leak a lot but the water warms up 35 degrees on the highest heat/lowest water level. The main problem is that the heater shuts off every 50 to 60 seconds and I had to turn the water off and then on every time. What is the problem? My husband tightened all connections as much as he dared and was not able to eliminate leaks.

If you are using a gun type sprayer it will go on and off. Which makes the system turn on and off. You will need to get a spray that continuously sprays. If you have any more questions please contact customer service at 800-365-1311

Where can I get parts? The brass valve that screws in at the bottom to drain fell out.

            Q:

I keep the temp on the lowest setting and the water on the highest setting. Hot water will sometimes surge through and i constantly feel i have to keep my hand on my horse wherever the water sprays to make sure he doesn't get a blast of hot water. Is there a solution?

2 issues could be at fault here,
              1) it could be a buildup of calcium and mineral deposit within the heaters pipes themselves. (simple fix – is to back flush the unit with vinegar or to descale the unit to remove all the buildup)
              2) it could be an issue with her water pressure not being steady and fluctuating causing the water to get hotter for short periods.
              - The issue is not that it is a setting on the heater, it is simply that there is buildup within the heating pipes that is causing the water to slow down at times and create those hot flashes or that the issue lies in her water line and not producing a steady flow or pressure.

I also keep it at medium heat, and test it regularly. I have not had any trouble with keeping a steady temp. But I did have trouble with the flame going out on the propane on windy days.

I have find if I use the continuous flow nozzle it comes with, I have no problem. But if I use my trigger nozzle, every time I release the handle the water and heater turns off. When I squeeze the nozzle all comes back on and there is a blast of hot water.

I've never had that problem.  I keep water at highest and gas at the middle setting   I've had it give me a blast of cold water once in awhile.  If there is wind it will fluctuate.  Love this machine   I also use a different nozzle then came with it.  It's
an adjustable spray.  Hope this helps.

In a climate that doesn't go below freezing, does this unit still need to be drained? I only need it for the winter months, so I'd like to know the requirements for draining to prevent damage others have mentioned.

We suggest to all ways drain the unit. If you know it is going to get below freezing drain and use pressured air to put through the unit to make sure you got all the water out of the coils.
