        Comments about Riders Rasp™:

My mare has a tendency to flare and chip when she's barefoot and I bought this because I wanted to get her back to being barefoot and wanted something to control her feet in between farrier visits. I've used a full rasp before and hoped that this would be a good compromise in size, I really hate having skinned knuckles.

It was hard to get the angles I wanted with the rider rasp to control the flares and you cannot keep a toe round with this item, which disappointed me. It didn't work as effectively as the full rasps and I eventually gave up and asked my barn owner for her rasp so I could have a better tool.

Now, admittedly I bought this for a rough transition period from shoes to barefoot. But I would have liked a little more effectiveness. I could see this being useful to keep in a saddle bag for a long trail ride or camping. I will not be using it for daily use, I have a full rasp for that.

It was comfortable to hold and I liked that it was compact and light. Barring what I hoped to use it for, it was easy to manipulate around the hoof and no skinned knuckles!

          Comments about Riders Rasp™:

Just pulled my horses shoes and wanted to keep them from breaking apart. The rider's rasp was perfectly positioned to file the hoof without any knowledge of farriery. It was very comfortable to use. Only issue was the price - considerably more that a regular rasp.

            Comments about Riders Rasp™:

I bought the Riders Rasp to keep up with the accelerated hoof growth of my 4 year old adopted mare as she was being rehabilitated from near-starvation. With nutrition, those feet just took off, and her toes would get quite long between farrier visits. She was also recovering from chronic laminitis, so during recovery, cracks and chips were troublesome. The Riders Rasp is easy to use, and keeps things nice and rounded though I will say the user should have an understanding of hoof wall anatomy and if the horse has a thinner hoof wall due to injury or dysfunction, special care must be taken not to remove too much. With an already-healthy hoof, it would be hard to do any damage. Also, it certainly does not replace the care of a farrier, but it is not intended to. It takes a bit of practice to get the pressure and movement right and care should be taken not to twist or pull on the horses leg or pastern while sliding the Rasp back and forth. As my mare was unhandled previously, the Rasp was also a great way to prepare her for the farrier's visit.
