  1. Measure approximately 3” up from the bottom of your horse’s tail bone. Part your horse’s tail hair and pull the upper hairs out of the way; secure with bands or clips.
  2. Position the tail extension on the lower third of the tail bone.
  3. The bottom of the extension should not pass the bottom of the horse’s fetlock.
  4. Divide a center portion of the hair into three ½” diameter sections for braiding.
  5. Feed the left loop onto one of the strands, up against the tail bone and begin braiding tightly, keeping your braid behind the extension and exerting downward pressure to keep the braid lying flat.
  6. Braid the strands down about 2-3” and tie off with a band.
  7. Pull tight against the extension so the braid lies flat against the extension hair.
  8. Repeat this process for the right sided loop.
  9. Optional: pick up a strand of hair from the left side of your horse's tail. Then, pick up a strand from your tail extension and braid them together. Make your braid small and tight and start braiding as close to the tail bone as possible; only braid down a few inches. Then secure with a rubber band. Repeat this process for the right side. Doing these 2 braids will keep your tail extension from swinging back and forth.
  10. You can secure around the braid and top of the tail extension with electrical tape for extra support.
  11. Unclip the top half of hair and brush out your tail.
  12. The bottom of the tail extension should fall at the bottom of the horse’s fetlock. Test by backing the horse SLOWLY. If the horse comes close to stepping on the extension…STOP! Check to be sure the top of the extension is as close to the tailbone as possible. If the extension is still too long, the tail needs to be trimmed to the proper length to ensure the horse does not step on the end and pull the braid from the tailbone.
*Under AQHA rules and regulations, tails may be lengthened by hair to hair attachment only, with no attachments of any kind to the tailbone. Check your breed or show association rules regarding the use of a tail extension.
Tail Care:
All tails are 100% natural horse hair and should be shampooed and conditioned regularly. Blow dry or towel dry and fluff when completely dry to give a full look and add body. Storing in a padded case keeps tail in ready to show condition.
