CAUTION: Burns White Legs

By KS

from PA

Comments about Fly Free Zone Leg Bands:

The pros: these work and do a great job keeping the flies away and they smell good.

The cons: I bought two sets for my two horses, one a bay with four black legs, one a buckskin with two black legs and two white legs. They worked great on my bay and on my buckskin's two black legs. Within 24 hours after the first day I used them, my buckskin's white legs had a whole red band around her legs, same size and same location that the bands were the day prior. One week later, I'm still dealing it's red, hot, swollen, irritated skin that is flaking off now.

I do not recommend these for horses with sensitive skin or white legs.

Comments about Fly Free Zone Leg Bands:

We use this product in conjunction with the fly collars. Tried other brands and not impressed with the plastic fastener ends that get brittle and break easily! The velcro fasteners work wonderfully and stay in place! We get three weeks time per set by re-applying our insect repellent to the foam bands!

              • Q:

Could I spray the bands with herbal tick repellent, and can they be re-activated by spraying them again after the effectiveness wears off?

                • Staff Reviewer

                  A:

These will not be re-activated by spraying them once the initial effectiveness wears off. Spraying another repellent on should not cause any conflict with these bands.

              • Q:

I am interested in the Fly free Zone Leg bands and Neck bands. My question /concern is: My two horses are outside at all times only brought in occasionally. It says to take bands off when washing which is understandable, but are they going to stay affective if it rains and if they are out in grass in the morning dew? Thanks.

                  A:

Getting them wet will diminish their ability to repel flies but they will still repel.
