FES Ported Barrel Kimberwick
The Ported Barrel Kimberwick offers a comfort zone when the horse is relaxed and flexed at the poll. This bit functions as both a direct action and leverage bit using a curb strap or chain. If the rein is attached to the top hook, it works as a direct action bit, exerting the same amount of pressure on the mouth as on the reins. If the rein is attached to the bottom hook, it works like a leverage bit, tilting the mouthpiece forward and applying pressure to parts of the mouth, curb and poll.

Comments about FES Ported Barrel Kimberwick:

My green broke horse was rooting at her Expensive curved comfort snaffle and the joint was sitting between the roof of her mouth & tongue - She was beginning to resist being bitted up. I switched to this bit - no rooting, no banging and she responds well to it. Great step up to a western shanked leverage bit. The hinge on one side stuck & I will have to oil it to get smoother movement. Would like to find the same shaped bit with copper inlay & better quality side hinges. (The Expensive step 2 I ordered didn't fit as well as this bit )

Comments about FES Ported Barrel Kimberwick:

My mare is a reiner and a driving horse. She did well in a correction port, but would 'brace' against a standard snaffle, in spite of years of work. When I began driving more and reining less, I wanted to find a bit I could both ride and drive in. As I tried different mouthpieces it finally dawned on me that my horse is one of those who get jabbed on the roof of the mouth by a hinged snaffle. I wanted just a hint of leverage to remind her to flex at the poll, and the ported barrel to give subtle direction laterally. There is a VERY subtle (like 3/16") arch to the mouthpiece, so be sure not to accidently put it on the bridle 'backwards'. I also changed the curb hooks as a personal preference. FINALLY I have her seeking contact without fear, and willing responsiveness in a few months I could not get in years of earlier work. I want a do-over! Best of all, with the same bit on both riding bridle and driving bridle, there is a consistancy in our communication we could not have before. Fitting a bit to a horse is as personal as fitting prescription glasses to a person...when the HORSE chooses the bit it likes, it can focus on what your hands are saying.

I was looking for a shank less English bit with a curb chain for my ACTHA competitions and this bit fit the bill perfectly and my horse responds well to it :)

I used this bit on a mare that is too fast at the canter. Added great brakes in a flash! Was a useful tool for the pen when a fast fix was needed. The quality is lacking.

          Stainless Steel

Bits are most commonly made of stainless steel. Stainless steel can be cleaned and polished repeatedly without damaging the finish. It is strong, durable, and flavorless and does not impact salivation. Some stainless steel mouths are inlaid with copper.

          Copper

Copper encourages salivation to increase the sensitivity of the horse’s mouth. It warms up quicker than stainless steel in cold weather.

          Sweet Iron

Sweet iron is cold-rolled steel. The material appears rusty after repeated use. This oxidation tastes sweet to the horse and increases salivation.

          Rubber

Rubber softens the action of the bit as it is softer than traditional metals. Rubber-covered bits are generally thicker than metal.

          Aluminum

Aluminum is lightweight and easy to maintain.

          Plastic

Plastic bits are softer than traditional metal bits and they are durable. Many plastic bits are scented or flavored.

          Nickel Silver

Nickel silver is a nickel alloy, also known as German silver. It encourages salivation for a more sensitive and supple mouth.
