FES Uxeter Kimberwick

FES Uxeter Kimberwick

  • Outstanding choice for horses learning the basics and for schooling
  • Works mainly off the bars of the mouth and allows horses to swallow
  • Reins slots offer separate leverage options to achieve desired results
  • Top slot offers direct action and lower puts pressure on the mouth, curb and poll
  • Stainless steel pinchless mouthpiece and cheeks with a very low port
  • Curb hooks and chain are included
  • Port height:  ¾”
  • Mouth:  5”
  • Bit diameter:  13mm
full description
This bit features a slightly ported solid mouthpiece. Creates bar and tongue pressure while still allowing tongue relief when the horse bends at the poll. This bit creates no palette pressure. A good "soft bit" for horses that need very little port, but work better in a solid mouthpiece than in a snaffle. A good transition bit form dee ring to solid mouth for novice horses.

I bought this bit after consulting a friend about the lack of brakes on a training snaffle. I also had read some other reviews. I've used it a couple times now and it's exactly what I was looking for. The brakes of a curb but able to direct rein off he D-rings.

The clinician that was at the driving clinic I went to over the summer, recommended the Kimberwick bit. I notice a big difference in my horse. He seems much more comfortable and doesn't fight the bit so much. He has a pretty hard mouth and I don't have to use a lot of contact with this. I used it first for the driving clinic, but I have switched over to using it for trail riding too. I used to ride in an English hackamore and for a while a tom thumb. The hackamore was good, but the kimberwick is better. Highly recommend this for some gentle control.

I have a very active Arab gelding and had him in a jointed snaffle. Would drop his head and go into full on bucking fit at any time. At the advice of a friend I changed to the low port straight bar kimberwick. He's a different horse. Pulls in his head, soft in the mouth and I can pull him up at a moments notice.

            Stainless Steel

Bits are most commonly made of stainless steel. Stainless steel can be cleaned and polished repeatedly without damaging the finish. It is strong, durable, and flavorless and does not impact salivation. Some stainless steel mouths are inlaid with copper.

Copper encourages salivation to increase the sensitivity of the horse’s mouth. It warms up quicker than stainless steel in cold weather.

            Sweet Iron

Sweet iron is cold-rolled steel. The material appears rusty after repeated use. This oxidation tastes sweet to the horse and increases salivation.

Rubber softens the action of the bit as it is softer than traditional metals. Rubber-covered bits are generally thicker than metal.

Aluminum is lightweight and easy to maintain.

Plastic bits are softer than traditional metal bits and they are durable. Many plastic bits are scented or flavored.

            Nickel Silver

Nickel silver is a nickel alloy, also known as German silver. It encourages salivation for a more sensitive and supple mouth.
