Choosing the Best Copper Snaffle Bit

If your horse tends to evade the bit, fights in your hands, gets behind the bit or lacks suppleness through their poll or jaw, trying a copper snaffle bit might be just the trick! Copper horse bits have a sweet taste to a horse which increases their saliva creating a better environment in their mouth. They can accept the bit faster, relax quicker, making your rides and training sessions more productive.

There are various types of copper snaffle bits for horses:

  • Copper Inlay / Roller Bit: These types of bits have just enough copper in them to promote salivation without being too overpowering.

  • Copper Mouthpiece Bit: The solid copper mouthpiece is great for horses that just don’t want to accept the bit or be supple. These can also be a smart choice when starting a young or nervous horse.

  • Sweet Iron Bit: This dark colored bit gets sweeter tasting over time as it oxidizes, along with copper inlays the combination keeps a horse’s mouth moist during work for better flexion.
  • Frequently Asked Questions About Copper Snaffle Bits

Are copper bits good for horses?

Copper bits are good for horses that tend to be hard mouthed, evade the bit, get tight in their jaw or mouth, and for younger horses. The copper snaffles encourage a horse to salivate which results in more relaxation and suppleness through their mouth as they accept the bit.

Why do some bits have copper?

Some bits, like copper snaffles, have copper in them to promote salivation which can allow a horse to be more relaxed and accepting of the bit. Copper snaffles can have copper inlays or copper rollers, or a full copper mouthpiece for a more intense effect.

    Do copper bits rust?

Copper bits do not rust but get what is called a “patina” over time, which causes discoloration such as a green or muddled hue to the copper, unlike the bright copper color you see on a brand new copper snaffle. However, sweet iron bits, which often have a copper inlay to them, do rust over time which causes the sweet taste to the metal horses enjoy!

How do you clean copper bits?

To clean a copper bit you can wipe them clean with warm water and a rag, drying them between use. Products such as Brasso cleaner can be used as well. If you want to shine up a dull copper horse bit with materials you have right at home, you can use vinegar (be sure to rinse well) or even ketchup to restore the bright shine to your copper snaffle bit.
