Breastplate for Horses: The English Breastplate Fit and Function
An English breastplate or sometimes called an English breast collar is a piece of horse tack that keeps the saddle from slipping backward on the horse’s back. This is especially useful in English jumping events where the horse’s effort to clear the fence can move the saddle.
Breastplates for horses can become multi-purpose pieces of English tack with the addition of a standing Martingale or running martingale attachments. Breastplates have a ring at the chest where martingale attachments may be attached. When breastplates have a martingale attachment, they not only keep the saddle in place but also correct the horse if they throw their head up.
English breastplates are traditionally made in quality leather in raised, padded and fancy stitched designs.
