An O-Ring or Eggbutt snaffle bit sends a horse the maximum signal when the rider increases the rein tension. It is thought to be among the best bits for younger horses and new riders, and helps to develop lateral movement. We offer high-quality O-Ring bits and Eggbutt snaffle bits from manufacturers like FES, Herm Sprenger, Stubben and Myler.

O-Ring (Loose Ring) Snaffles

The O-Ring bit is a mild bit that comes with a variety of mouthpieces and has a free moving, loose cheek ring. These are often loose rings, which means they can move freely. These bits enhance bit movement while putting pressure on the tongue and bars. Use loose ring bits to improve body suppleness and teach lateral movement. You’ll find FES O-Ring sweet iron twisted wire snaffle bits, Herm Sprenger loose ring bits and loose ring copper snaffle bits and Myler loose ring ported barrel bits. There are loose ring bits with rollers, loose ring comfort snaffles with a free rotating barrel and slow twisted wire snaffles. Some models have a sweet iron mouthpiece that promotes salivation to soften the mouth, while others have stainless steel O-rings. If you’re using this type of bit on a younger horse in a Western discipline, a leather curb strap is frequently used so that the bit’s rings won’t slide into their mouth.

Why Use an Eggbutt Snaffle Bit?

If the O-Ring snaffle bit is chafing the corners of your horse’s mouth, you can either consider using rubber bit guards or switch to an eggbutt snaffle. This bit also helps develop a horse’s lateral movement, and it can be more comfortable for horses, because it’s not as likely as the O-Ring snaffle to pinch their lips. The fact that there’s no curb or leverage action makes this a mild snaffle bit. These are good training bits, for getting younger horses accustomed to using a bit. We have slow twist stainless steel and copper eggbutt snaffles, single-jointed stainless steel eggbutt snaffles and comfort snaffles for inexperienced horses. There are also low port snaffles, French link snaffles and forward tilt ported barrel snaffle bits. Some models use copper to encourage salivation and prevent dry mouth.
