The Ankle Boot – Hind Ankle Boots for Horses
The ankle boot helps protect the horse’s fetlocks from impact, brushing and interference. Often called hind boots, ankle boots are used on the hind fetlocks.
Sometimes a horse’s hind legs don’t track perfectly straight and in doing so, interferes with the movement of the opposite hind leg, striking the fetlock. This can cause scrapes, rubs and knocks and bruises. An ankle boot can provide protection, absorbing impact and creating a barrier against scrapes and cuts.
Ankle boots come in a variety of materials such as leather, neoprene, vented neoprene, PVC and gel. The most important aspect of an ankle boot is that it fits well and stays in place.
Horse’s hind legs may interfere with each other when traveling straight if their conformation is such, in tight turns, in any kind of work that requires the horse’s hind legs to cross over each other or other competition and training movements.
