The only rug proof I buy

Nikwax is my favorite for washing & waterproofing my turnout blankets. It's certainly not the cheapest, but it does the job and since I only need it once a year for each blanket, I don't mind spending the extra money. This keeps my turnouts in good shape, I use it for routine care whether they truly need it or not.

Good stuff and easier than spraying

I wash my blankets at home so I wash them regularly every couple of weeks. Even though I don't put them in the dryer, the waterproofing wears off, so this is a good way to get them 're-prooofed' without having to spray them - which is often a multi-day process as I spray several coats.

Doesn't go as far as you think

I have always washed my blankets at the end of each season using Nikwax Rug Wash and loved the way they smell after washing and how it helps with the longevity of the blankets. I can usually do about 6-7 blankets done with one in bottle of the wash. I felt they could probably used some waterproofing (although they kept the horses dry this year) as they are about 4 years old now so I bought the Nikwax Synthetic Rug Proof solution. I was disappointed that the bottle only does about 2 blankets - 17.5 ozs per blanket is needed. I have to now buy 2 more bottles of it and put my blanket washing chore on hold until it arrives. I just wish that was clearer on the ordering page. I will see next year how the waterproofing holds up but the overall Nikwax brand for washing (and hopefully waterproofing too) is the only way to take care of your blankets! And I have always done them in my washer - never sent them out for expensive cleaning.

Used this in conjunction with the Nikwax Rug Wash. Together they did a great job of restoring our horses' rain sheets. Waterproofing is important here in the Pacific Northwest!

Can this be sprayed on a wet blanket

Star

Yes

The rug proof needs to be worked into the fabric and into the seams. I don't think it will be as effective if sprayed on.

The instructions say either soak and rinse, or apply to clean rug with a sponge. I suspect that if you sprayed it on, it would result in a lot of wastage and an uneven application. Try the sponge method if you are hand washing. Also, in my experience, it doesn't take well unless you use the nikwax rug wash to wash it with first. I used another brand once and it didn't work out. I don't think it's designed to be sprayed on but you can dilute in a bucket and sponge it on, or in a bigger bucket and dunk the blanket in it.

Approximately how many blankets can you treat with this bottle?

McCayla
