Chaps: Whether in a training barn or the show ring, chaps are an important part of the Western rider's attire. Comfortable fit and traditional design provides riders a secure seat while protecting clothing. Schneiders carries a comprehensive selection of riding apparel for comfort, safety and style, including these premium quality western riding chaps. They're an important part of your western riding apparel, as they help to protect your clothing and legs from rubbing and chafing. Whether you're on the trails, working or in a rodeo or show arena, you'll be more secure and comfortable in the saddle while you look fashionable. Our men's and women's western chaps have a classic design and comfortable fit. They're made from modern materials that are lighter and cooler than traditional leather, yet they're just as stylish and come with decorative embellishments like fringe. Choose from ivory or black chaps.

The History of Western Riding Chaps: Buckled on top of jeans or trousers, western chaps are named after "chaparreras," the Spanish equivalent, which were originally designed to protect Mexican horsemen when riding on horseback through the "chaparro" (dense, low-growing thicket). This proud tradition became a vital part of the culture of the American cowboy in the west, though cattle herders in Mexico and Spain were the first to use them. By the end of the 19th century, chaps were frequently worn by Texas cowboys and those in the cattle industry. There are various styles of chaps, including shotgun chaps (stovepipes), with straight and narrow legs; batwing chaps, wide cut and flaring out at the bottom; chinks, half-length chaps with long fringe along the bottom and at the sides; and armitas, a short legging that has closed legs and is similar to pants. Chaps are typically made from leather, except for woolies, which are made with fleece or cowhide with the hair intact. However, modern-day materials make chaps more comfortable and lightweight, while still providing the same amount of protection and the same classic appearance.
