The Open Front Boot – The Popular Choice in the Jumper Ring

Open front boots or horse jumping boots are boots that provide protection to the back of the horse’s cannon bone and fetlock along with the tendons and ligaments that run down the back of the horse’s leg. Less of a support boot and more of a shock absorbing strike boot, an open front boot protects from jump rails and hind hooves striking the back of the front legs.

It’s important to note that the open front boot is designed to protect the back of the horse’s leg while the front is left open to the potential of rail knocks while jumping. It is thought that by occasionally getting the sting of a knock will help make the horse more careful, being sure to clear the jumps.

Traditionally made in leather with a thicker panel down the back, open front horse boots have evolved into more technical materials like neoprene and PVC. Some open front boots now even incorporate shock-absorbing gel into their designs. Regardless of which type you choose it is important that the back of the boot has the additional protection along the back of the boot.

As with all horse boots it is important the open front boot fits properly to reduce the risk of the boot falling and rubbing. Open front boots are typically sized by pony, horse and oversized, the changes to each size shown in the length (knee to fetlock) and to some degree the width of the cannon bone, When fitting an open front boot it is important the horse is able to bend both the knee and the fetlock without interference or rubbing.
