Western correction bits for horses are designed for animals that don’t respond to rein aids. These bits are meant only for training purposes and not for everyday use. As it’s a severe bit, it should only be used by experienced riders and professionals. We have correction bits from Professional’s Choice® FES, Myler, Robart™ and Billy Royal®. While these bits are designed for serious training, several styles are highly ornate, and we also have antique horse bits. Decorative features include copper inlay, engraved German silver overlay and copper accents.

Correction Bit Design

The standard western style correction bit has a high port and a thin mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is jointed on either side of the port. Certain correction bit models can be ornate, but their intended purpose is to bring about better communication between the horse and the rider.

The Various Styles of Correction Bits

At Schneiders, we offer different correction bit styles to fit specific needs. There are bits designed for intermediate or seasoned horses that only apply pressure when the bit is engaged. This type of bit, with its shaped and textured bars, applies pressure on the bar and palate while offering some relief on the tongue. Another bit for seasoned horses is one that features wire-wrapped copper bars, which promotes mouth sensitivity and salivation. This one applies direct pressure to the palate, encouraging horses to break at the poll. There are also stainless steel and copper bits for schooling, showing or tuning up seasoned horses, with pressure applied to the palate and tongue. The Myler sweet iron correction ported barrel bit has a curved mouthpiece and port for tongue relief and easier swallowing, and the sweet taste will encourage salivation.

You’ll find lightweight bits for intermediate to advanced horses, including a decorative engraved aluminum model. Some styles include a “comfort zone” to reward horses when the poll is flexed. There are spring-loaded low port correction bits, high port bits, medium port with antique bronze and silver dot detail and bits with heavy cheek pieces, designed for optimal balance. We also have training bits from FES that assist with transitioning horses from a snaffle bit. There are different specifications and design features for particular issues, so read through the descriptions carefully to find the ideal correction bit for your horse.
