Medium / High Port Bits

Medium and high-port curb bits lessen tongue pressure and increase the pressure on the bars, creating a stronger signal. Ports measuring over 2" can also pressure the palate to encourage flexing at the poll.

  • High-port bits should be used by experienced riders as contact is made with the palate, the rider's hands dictate the severity of all bits.

For creating a stronger signal and applying a greater pressure on the bars and less on the tongue, Schneiders offers these medium and high port curb bits. With ports that measure more than 2 inches, they can also apply pressure to the palate, encouraging horses to flex at the poll. We have medium and high port bits from well-known brands like FES, Professional’s Choice®, Robart™ and Myler.

FES Medium / High Port Bits

FES offers a wide variety of medium and high port bits. There’s a copper medium port grazing bit, which is lightweight and good for intermediate level training, and an antique bronze tire tool medium port bit, which is well-suited for seasoned horses in Western disciplines. They have cathedral mouth bits that are designed for more experienced horses and riders. These have features like black steel cheeks with nickel overlay and German silver trim, copper inlay or sweet iron to encourage salivation, aluminum engraved cheeks, antique bronze swivel cheeks with engraved silver-plated overlay, swivel port, copper rollers and decorative stainless-steel accents.

High and Medium Port Bits from Professional’s Choice, Robart and Myler

Professional’s Choice offers their Clear Signal collection of bits which, as the name suggests, promotes a strong two-way communication between you and your horse while only applying pressure when the bit is engaged. Myler’s seven shank ported barrel bit is a mild mouthpiece with a wide ported barrel, which allows for greater tongue relief. These bits are good for horses that are experienced but need more leverage. Robart’s spring loaded correction bits let you work each side individually. Use these bits to teach horses to lift at the shoulder. They’re also good for flexing exercises. Bits are black stainless steel with handsome engraved silver-plated overlays.
