These shanked snaffle bits are especially useful in classes that require limited movement of the rider’s hands. They help to provide leverage with less hand pressure. At Schneiders, we have shanked snaffle bits from Myler, FES, Dutton, Professional’s Choice® and Robart™. There are models for horses at different levels of training. Choose from sweet iron snaffle bits, stainless steel shank bits, training snaffles, comfort snaffles, dog bone snaffle bits and more.

Myler Shanked Snaffle Bits

Myler offers snaffle bits for young horses, beginning levels of training and those with soft mouths, as well as horses at intermediate training levels. There are snaffle bits that provide more tongue relief, and bits for horses with advanced skills but that need more control. For less experienced horses, there are bits with a wider barrel and curved mouthpiece for more comfortable tongue pressure and easier swallowing. For more seasoned horses, you’ll find bits that apply direct pressure to the tongue with a low port for tongue relief. These are helpful for horses learning skills such as bending, lead changes, collection, lateral flexion and shoulder lifting. We also have bits that provide some tongue relief with pressure on palate and bars, for advanced horses that need more control. A sweet iron copper inlay mouthpiece promotes salivation.

FES Snaffle Bits

FES’s shanked snaffles come in various types, such as twisted wire, dog bone, big star, dotted shank, smooth aluminum, stainless steel and jointed training snaffle bits. For young horses or less experienced riders, there are bits with smooth, comfortable stainless steel shanks and mouthpiece that allow individual action during training. These apply direct pressure to the bars of the mouth and the tongue. Other starter snaffle bits include the 3-piece stainless steel bit with extra dog bone link for even pressure and stainless steel bits with sweet iron mouthpiece, copper inlay to enhance salivation and long shanks for increased leverage.

Their twisted wire snaffle is good as a transition bit for horses moving to the next training level. This style provides a stronger signal, direct pressure on bars and tongue and added leverage for faster response. Intermediate snaffle bits include lightweight bits with tongue pressure and copper inlay on mouthpiece to promote salivation and increase sensitivity. There are also bits with embossed steel shanks and floral scroll work, plus snaffles with antique bronze cheeks, silver dot trim and star concho.
