Types of English Saddles and What to Know When Buying

English saddles come in a handful of types or seats. Each type is geared toward a seat of English riding. Hunter/Jumper, Dressage, Breeds and Gaited Horse, Eventing, Endurance and trail riding are all riding disciplines that use a form of an English saddle.

Hunter and Jumper riders typically chose a close contact English saddle. The close contact saddle has a forward flap with a slightly shallower seat than other types of English saddles to allow for jumping. Close contact saddles come in full leather or synthetic models, traditionally with a padded knee roll. More recently close contact saddles have incorporated features such as the molded knee roll and knee blocks, sometimes in different shapes and sizes such as in a front pencil or back triangle. Many close contact saddles have the ability for the rider to adjust the knee blocks location, tailoring the saddle to the rider’s leg. Top English close contact saddle brands include Pessoa®, M. Toulouse, Pinnacle, Joseph Sterling®, Stübben, Bates, Wintec and Ovation.

Dressage saddles have a deep seat a straight front flap. Dressage saddles feature a range of knee roll sizes and padding. In addition, some dressage saddles offer thigh blocks of various sizes with and without adjustment. The monoflap dressage saddle is when the billet straps for the girth are integrated into the flap of the saddle, creating only one layer of saddle between the rider’s leg and the horse. Dressage saddles are also available in leather or full synthetic models. Choose from top name brands like Bates, Passier®, Pinnacle, Stübben, and Wintec.

Cutback Saddles:

English cutback saddles are typically used in Saddle Seat riding or used on specific horse breeds. A cutback saddle’s pommel is cut-out towards the seat to allow the horse a higher headset and more shoulder action. The Joseph Sterling® cutback saddle is made to fit most Arabians, Morgans, Saddlebred and Gaited horses. These cutback saddles are perfectly balanced for unparalleled contact, comfort and feel.

All-Purpose English Saddles are designed for everyday riding, on the flat or over fences. The all-purpose saddle features include longer but still forward flaps and a fairly deep seat. Popular all-purpose English saddles brands are Wintec, Kincade® and HDR.

Endurance and trail saddles are designed to keep the rider comfortable and stable over long distances. Special features of an endurance and trail saddle include multiple D-rings to allow the rider to attach water bottles, first aid kits and more to their saddle and a wider foot rest on the stirrups for more support and comfort. Top English endurance and trail saddle brands are Bates and Wintec.

Some English saddles are manufactured with a changing gullet system allowing the rider to customize the saddle to their horse’s withers and size. Originally only available in synthetic English saddles, gullet change systems are now available in some high-end leather models. The most popular brand is the Easy Change Gullet System by Wintec.
