How hot is too hot to ride?
Consider temperature, humidity, sun, and wind together — not just the thermometer. On days with high heat index, no breeze, and full sun, reduce intensity or ride early/late. Horses acclimated to your climate handle heat better than horses recently shipped from cooler regions (allow up to 21 days to adjust).

Is it safe to cold-hose my horse in summer?
Yes — this is a common myth. As long as the water is cooler than your horse's body temperature, hosing pulls heat out through conduction. Scrape off the warmed water and repeat for faster cooling. The colder the water, the more heat you remove.

Do horses need electrolytes or just salt?
Both play a role. Salt (sodium chloride) drives thirst and replaces basic sodium lost in sweat. Electrolyte supplements add potassium, magnesium, calcium, and trace minerals for recovery after exercise or travel. A Himalayan salt lick provides free-choice minerals; add electrolytes during peak heat or heavy work.

When should my horse wear a cooling fly sheet?
Choose lightweight, open-weave mesh designed for hot climates — not a heavy turnout. Horses with access to shade and airflow can often wear a breathable fly sheet under a 90° heat index.
