Choosing the Best Blanket Liner for Your Horse

A horse blanket liner is one of the most cost-effective ways to add warmth to a blanket you already own. Rather than buying a heavier stable blanket or turnout blanket for the coldest weeks of winter, a liner layers underneath your horse's current blanket to boost the total insulation — then comes off again once temperatures rise, so you're not stuck with a too-warm blanket for the rest of the season.

Blanket liners are also useful when your horse's needs shift through the winter. A clipped horse, a senior horse, or a hard keeper may need extra warmth on the coldest nights without needing it all season — a liner adds that warmth only when it's needed, without a second full blanket taking up space in your tack room.

Our blanket liners use the same Adjusta-Fit® fit system found across our stable blankets and turnout blankets, so the fit you already know translates directly underneath your outer blanket. Choose a V-Free® wither relief liner for a flat or broad-shouldered horse, a VTEK® wither relief liner if your horse has higher withers, or a Cutback shoulder relief liner for a horse with an upright head carriage. Each style adjusts at the shoulder for a closer, more comfortable fit under your blanket.

One of the biggest perks of our blanket liners is that they're built without any hardware on the front, barrel, or hindquarter area — nothing to dig into your horse or catch on your outer blanket. Instead, each liner features leg strap slots so you can feed your blanket's existing leg straps straight through the liner. This keeps bulk to a minimum and holds both layers aligned as your horse moves, instead of letting the liner shift or bunch up underneath.

If you're adding a liner instead of a sheet, our Dura-Nylon® sheet liner is a breathable, unlined layer that goes under a sheet or heavier blanket for a smoother fit and cleaner coat — without adding bulk or warmth.

  • Lightweight - 180 grams of fill
  • Medium Weight - 280 grams of fill

Frequently Asked Questions About Blanket Liners

What is a horse blanket liner?
A horse blanket liner is a nylon layer worn underneath your horse's existing stable blanket or turnout blanket. It doesn't replace your outer blanket — it adds to it, boosting warmth on especially cold nights without requiring a separate, heavier blanket.

How much warmth does a blanket liner add?
Liner warmth is measured in grams of fill, the same way blanket warmth is. Our liners come in Lightweight (180g) and Medium Weight (280g) options — the liner's fill adds to your outer blanket's fill for your horse's total warmth. For example, a 180g liner under a 200g stable blanket gives your horse roughly 380g of total warmth.

Do I need a blanket liner if I already have a heavier blanket?
Not necessarily. A liner makes the most sense if your current blanket is right for most of the season but falls short on the coldest nights, or if your horse's needs change over the winter — after a clip, with weight loss, or with age. A liner adds warmth for those stretches instead of a second full blanket you only need occasionally.

Can a blanket liner be used with a turnout blanket?
Yes. Liners layer underneath either a stable blanket or a turnout blanket — the liner adds warmth while your outer blanket keeps its stable-only or waterproof turnout properties.

What's the difference between a blanket liner and a sheet liner?
A blanket liner adds insulating fill under a stable or turnout blanket. A sheet liner, like our Dura-Nylon® V-Free® Wither Relief Sheet Liner, is unfilled and breathable — it's designed to layer under a sheet for a smoother fit and cleaner coat, not for added warmth.
