Does my Horse Need a Correction Bit or Port Bit?

A Correction Bit or Port Bit is designed with a high port and shanks to put pressure on the tongue, bars, roof of the mouth, and the poll when you give hand aids. The correction bit and port bit can be useful pieces of tack for green horses while they are in training. If you are currently training your horse, and you have a lot of experience, a correction bit could be a great option if you need a stronger bit. However, only use a correction bit or port bit if you are an advanced rider as these bits can be very harsh in the wrong hands.

The english version of the correction bit typically mirrors the leverage component of the western styled correction bit. They are often shaped like a d-ring but have leverage attachments on the side of the bit to put pressure on the poll while being used. There are many other designs, but almost all of them have some sort of leverage component or they have a high port. Some are also used with double reins so the rider can increase their precision when giving rein aids.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Correction Bit

What is a correction bit used for?

Correction bits are a tool used by advanced riders to communicate with green horses who aren’t listening to rein aids. They usually have a high port and shanks or some sort of leverage component to help the rider communicate with their horse.

Can you show in a correction bit?

Many shows will not allow a correction bit. Check the rules of your show to see what the rules are around bits. Many people only use their correction bit for schooling and will use a milder bit in the show ring.

When would you use a port bit?

Port bits with high ports are designed for horses who are not obeying rein aids, while port bits with low ports are designed to offer tongue relief. Port bits with high ports are typically used on horses who are still in training and should only be used by advanced riders who understand how a port bit works. Port bits can vary in harshness depending on how high the port is.

What does a port do on a horse bit?

The port bit is designed to have a higher port than other bits. This redistributes pressure from your horse's tongue to the bars of their mouth. If the port is low it can relieve pressure from the horse's tongue, if it is a high port it will relieve pressure but also reinforce rein aids and can serve as a training tool.

How is a bit port measured?

To find the height of a port bit measure from the base of the bit vertically up to the highest point in the port. To measure the width, measure the distance between the start and end of the port. Otherwise this bit can be measured like any other bit. Measure the length of the mouthpiece and the length of the shanks to determine the size of the bit. The standard size for the port bit is 5”.
