What are horse trimmers used for?
Horse trimmers are used for trimming delicate areas of a horse, including under the jaw, around the ears and eyes, or on the fetlocks–any place that requires the delicacy and precision that full-body clippers don’t have. These super-small trimmers can be kept in your pocket for last-minute trimming or daily edging. They are also useful to trim the hair around open injuries to prevent stray hairs from embedding themselves in the wound.
Can you trim a horse’s whiskers?
The horse’s whiskers are a sensory organ with many important uses. They help your horse navigate in the dark and find objects like a fence wire, feed, or water source. While removing them may not be technically harmful, we discourage the removal of the whiskers. In fact, FEI and international organizations have banned the trimming of whiskers from competitive events.
How do you clip a horse's muzzle?
The sensory whiskers should be avoided while cleaning up the face. Clean the neckline gently with your trimmers and neaten up the chin groove, using your free hand to cover and protect the surrounding whiskers. If you prefer a clean-shaven mustache, you may clip that as well. Pinch the nose gently and trim lightly to reduce tickling.
Can you shave a horse with a razor?
A razor may be useful in a pinch for minor cleanup around the face, but a small handheld clipper will do the job better and faster. Razors run the risk of nicking the skin. They dull very quickly too, making repeated use impractical.
