The Problem

Your Horse Is Stomping Because the Fly Boot Isn't Working

It is six in the morning and the bugs are already working your horse's lower legs. Before you reach the gate he lifts a hind foot and drives it into the ground, then again, then a sharp swish of the tail. You sprayed before turnout, but the smallest insects are still gathering at the fetlocks and cannon bones, exactly where your horse cannot reach them.

A sheet and a mask cover most of your horse. From the knee down he is on his own unless the boots give him a real barrier. And when a boot will not stay where you fastened it, he does not have that either. A loose, straight-sided boot rotates, slides toward the fetlock, or gets stepped out of during turnout. You come back expecting protected legs and find one boot in the grass, another sitting crooked, and your horse still stomping. Continuous stomping is what causes the joint, muscle, and hoof problems that leg protection is meant to reduce, so a boot that has moved is not a small problem.
Why It Keeps Happening

The Boot Keeps Moving. The Flies Don't.

The problem is not you, and it is not your horse. A fly boot is asked to do four things at once: block insects, let air through, follow a leg that tapers, and stay put while your horse walks, grazes, and rolls. Miss one of those and the whole thing comes apart in a morning.

A loosely shaped boot can fasten tightly to itself without fitting your horse's leg. The extra material rotates or settles downward as he moves, the covered area shifts, and bunched fabric collects around the fetlock. You tighten the closures, reposition it, try another size, but no adjustment fixes a shape that does not follow the leg.

Then there is the mesh. Plenty of boots are sold for flies without ever saying what weave they use or which insects it is built to stop. That matters most when the bugs driving your horse crazy are gnats and no-see-ums, small enough to walk straight through a coarse weave. You end up spraying before turnout, fastening boots, walking the paddock for whatever came off, and checking legs again at night, still managing the boots instead of protecting your horse.
  • Gnats and no-see-ums walk straight through a coarse mesh.
  • Straight-sided boots rotate, slide, and get stepped out of during turnout.
  • Continuous stomping is what drives joint, muscle, and hoof problems.
  • A boot that traps heat gets rubbed off by lunchtime.
The Solution

350D Window-Screen Mesh, Shaped to the Leg

We build these from 350D extra-fine window-screen nylon mesh, tight enough to stop the gnats and no-see-ums that walk right through a coarse weave, and the flies and mosquitos with them, and open enough to keep air moving around the leg. It carries a 40% UV protection rating, and it is our best airflow option for horses with access to shelter in moderate to hot climates.

The fit is the other half. Soft web binding is shaped to follow your horse's lower leg so the boot holds its position instead of rotating and sliding down, which is exactly why this is the pair we point people to when their horse has learned to step out of everything else. Reflective hook and loop tab closures fasten across the front and make the boots easier to spot in low-light turnout or on a trail ride that runs past sunset.

For your horse, that adds up to a light, breathable barrier sitting where the bugs work and where a swishing tail is no help at all. He can walk, graze, and move through turnout without carrying a heavy structure around his lower leg, and without the stomping that leg protection is meant to reduce.

This set includes two boots, so you can cover the front legs, the hind legs, or order two sets for all four. Horses define who we are, and we have been building for them since 1948.

What Riders Are Saying

★★★★★

"This was not my first set of fly boots. I literally have worn the first nearly out. I say nearly because they are still in use! I live in hot buggy Texas and the flies, mosquitoes and no-see-ums make summers torturous! Fly spray on the legs only lasts a short time and then my very sensitive horse is stamping his feet and swishing his tail to no avail. When I saw these mesh boots I thought my problems could be solved. The mesh is perfect, breathable for the hot climate and since the flies seem..."

Precision Construction for Horses That Demand More

The Mosquito Mesh™® II Fitted Fly Boot represents Schneider's answer to the rider who needs more than a slip-on solution — built with the same proprietary mesh material but constructed with a tailored profile and reinforced closure panel. Stitching at stress points is reinforced to handle the pull of active horses without the closure stretching out of shape over a season of daily use.

The Mosquito Mesh™® II fabric is dimensionally stable, meaning it won't distort and create thin spots in the mesh after repeated washing and rewetting. Schneider has been refining fly protection construction since 1948, and the Fitted Boot reflects 78 years of listening to what working horse owners actually need.

  • Mosquito Mesh™ — Best dual airflow & insect protection
  • Best protection against gnats, stable flies & mosquitoes
  • Better protection against large flies (horse flies, greenheads)
  • Playful Durability — designed for active horses
  • 0.4 UPF UV rating
