Open Front Freedom — For Horses That Hate Being Fussed With

Most fly sheets assume every horse has the same chest width — and when the front is wrong, everything is wrong. Rotation, wither rubbing, gaps the gnats walk right through. The open-front V-Free® Adjusta-Fit® system fits your horse, not the average one.

The Problem

Closed Fronts Fail Wide-Chested and Fidgety Horses

It’s 6:45 in the morning, and your horse is already swishing, stamping, and shifting beside the paddock gate. Gnats are gathering around his belly while larger flies keep landing along his shoulders. You reach for his fly sheet, but he has little patience for another drawn-out blanketing routine. Before you can finish the chest closure, he steps sideways and makes you start lining everything up again.

Every horse owner knows how quickly a simple turnout task becomes frustrating when a sheet does not suit your horse’s build. A chest that sits too tightly can restrict the shoulders, while a front adjusted too loosely can let the sheet drift away from its intended position. Low or moderate withers add another fit consideration because the neckline and wither area need to remain comfortable as your horse grazes, walks, rolls, and gets back up.

Then there is the coverage problem. A conventional fly sheet may cover your horse’s back and sides while leaving more of the sensitive underbelly exposed. Mesh construction matters, too: a sheet intended for general fly protection may not publish the denier, weave, or level of protection offered against smaller insects. When summer brings a mix of flies, mosquitoes, midges, and gnats, you need to know what the material and closure design are actually built to handle.

By evening check, you should not have to wonder whether your horse’s sheet still fits the way it did at turnout. You need breathable coverage that addresses small insects, an adjustable front that works with his chest, and a belly closure designed to extend protection underneath. The right solution starts with specific construction—not vague promises about a one-shape-fits-all fit.

Why It Keeps Happening

A Misaligned Sheet Protects Nothing and Rubs Everything

The problem isn’t you, and it isn’t your horse. Fly sheets ask one garment to accommodate differences in chest width, shoulder slope, wither shape, head carriage, and movement. When the front and neckline offer limited adjustment, choosing the correct body length does not necessarily mean every other part of the sheet will suit your horse’s conformation.

The category also uses several very different closure systems. Some sheets rely on low cross surcingles, while others add a belly wrap or a closer-fitting bellyband. Those designs provide different amounts of material beneath your horse, yet product names do not always make that distinction obvious. If your horse is particularly bothered along his underline, a sheet that primarily covers his topline and sides may not provide the coverage you thought you were buying.

Mesh descriptions can be equally difficult to compare. “Breathable mesh,” “soft mesh,” and “fine weave” describe general qualities, but they do not tell you the same thing as a published material and denier specification. UV claims vary as well: one manufacturer may publish a percentage, while another may not list a UV rating at all. Without those details, you are left trying to compare products that sound similar but are constructed and equipped differently.

That uncertainty creates the familiar cycle: measure your horse, order a sheet, test the chest, inspect the belly coverage, and hope the neckline remains comfortable through turnout. If the design does not match your horse’s build or the insects bothering him, another size may not solve it. You need clearly stated materials, fit features, closures, and protection ratings before fly season—not another round of guesswork after the sheet arrives.

The Solution

Adjustable Chest, Reliable Wither Relief, All-Day Stability

The Schneiders® Mosquito Mesh® II V-Free® Adjusta-Fit Bellyband Fly Sheet starts with a published material specification: extra-fine 350D nylon mesh with a window-screen-style construction. It is designed to protect your horse from small to medium-sized flying insects while maintaining airflow in moderate to hot conditions. The body fabric carries a stated 40% UV-protection rating, giving you a defined figure rather than an unspecified sun-protection claim.

Fit is addressed through the V-Free® Wither Relief shape and the original Adjusta-Fit® system. This V-Free® option has a larger neck opening and sloped neckline designed for low- to moderate-withered horses, including Arabians, Quarter Horses, and other Stock breeds. Adjusta-Fit® runs along the neckline so you can customize the neck opening for your horse’s width and head carriage. The open front uses double snaps with a wider hook-and-loop closure, allowing the chest snugness to be adjusted when putting the sheet on.

Coverage continues beneath your horse with an adjustable bellyband that sits snug and flush when fitted correctly. Elastic inserts allow give as your horse moves, while locking bands help secure the T-post hardware. Reinforced gussets extend higher and farther forward to support freedom of movement, and an extra-large tail cover adds rear coverage. Detachable elastic leg straps are included and adjust from 20 to 38 inches.

For daily comfort, breathable 70D SilverTek® nylon lines the chest, shoulders, and tail flap. The sheet also includes reflective stripes on the flanks and tail for added visibility in low light. Together, these details give your horse fine-mesh insect coverage, published UV protection, airflow, and a fit system intended for his conformation. You get clearly defined features you can evaluate before turnout, plus a two-year limited warranty covering straps, surcingles, assembly, and hardware. It is a practical, horse-first approach backed by equine expertise and Trusted since 1948.

What Riders Are Saying

★★★★★

"This material is so perfect for our incredibly dry hot Arizona summers! So breathable but quite durable. Very good airflow."

"I have a grey horse who is very sensitive to both bugs and sun-bleaching. Most fly sheets tend to rub her chest raw, leaving bald spots, but the Mosquito Mesh II has been a game-changer. It’s much gentler on her skin and doesn't rub. One tip: definitely go with the detachable neck version. I own both styles, and the one with the attached neck eventually ripped just from her normal movement, whereas the detachable one holds up much better!"

"These fly sheets are by far superior to anything I have used before. They protect the horses from biting insects but allow airflow which is really important for our hot and humid Minnesota summers. They are great quality as well and hold up to many seasons of use on horses that are free to play, roll, and run around 24-7. My horses actually come to me willingly when they see me bring their sheets, they know they will have quick relief from the bugs!"

More Variables Controlled, More Comfort Guaranteed

The Open Front Bellyband configuration is favored by owners who know that fit is the single most important factor in whether a fly sheet actually protects your horse or simply creates new problems. Schneider's Adjusta-Fit® shoulder system combined with an open chest means three independent fitting points — chest, shoulder seam, and bellyband — so every horse can be dialed in precisely.

The V-Free® wither channel is constructed from the same rigid support architecture used across the entire V-Free® line, providing consistent spinal clearance that doesn't collapse under the weight of the sheet after hours of wear. At $159.99, this sheet delivers premium engineering at a price built to respect a horse owner's budget.
