Window-Screen Mesh, All the Way Under the Belly

Extra-fine 350D “window screen” nylon mesh stops even the tiniest gnats and carries a 40% UV rating — and the bellyband closure brings that coverage under the barrel, in our VTEK® Wither Relief fit for low to moderate withers.

The Problem

Not Every Wither Shape Responds to the Same Wither Relief System

It is not the horse flies that undo a summer. It is the midges and the gnats — small enough to slip through a mesh that looks solid from the barn aisle, and patient enough to work the underside of the barrel where nothing is covering your horse at all.

You see it at evening check. The sheet is still on, more or less where you left it, and he is still stamping and reaching around toward his belly. The welts are along the midline and behind the elbow, in exactly the places a standard surcingle sheet leaves open all day.

Fit compounds it. His shoulder angle, wither profile, and heartgirth all decide where a sheet settles once he drops his head to graze. A neckline that cannot be adjusted to his build will find its own position, and a sheet that has moved is a sheet with new gaps in it. Size up for room and there is more material free to shift; size down for security and the front starts to pull.

The real question is not whether your horse is wearing a fly sheet. It is whether the weave, the fit, and the coverage were chosen for the insects biting him and the way he is built.
Why It Keeps Happening

The Wrong Wither Architecture Fails Silently — Until You See the Damage

The problem is not that you measured carelessly, and it is not that your horse is difficult. A fly sheet can be exactly the right length and still miss if the neckline, wither shape, or belly closure does not suit the way he is built and the way he moves.

Many designs rely on a fixed neck opening and cross surcingles to cover a wide range of body types. That is adequate for a lot of horses, and it gives you very little control over how the front sits on one particular shoulder and wither. When your horse lowers his head to graze, walks the fence line, rolls, and gets back up, an imprecise front lets the sheet settle away from where you put it. Repeated movement turns a small mismatch into steady friction.

Then insect pressure exposes the second compromise. Large flies are easy to see. Mosquitoes, gnats, and midges are not, and they keep working if the mesh is not fine enough or the underside is loosely covered. You add more spray, bring him in earlier, tighten straps — none of which changes the weave or the fit.

That is how the replacement cycle starts. One sheet breathes but does not stop the small stuff. Another covers more but cannot be set cleanly through the front. A third fits the shoulder and leaves the belly open.
  • Midges and gnats working the belly and midline all day
  • A sheet that has quietly moved by the afternoon check
  • Cross surcingles that anchor the sheet but leave the underside open
  • Necklines that cannot be set for a low-withered, stock-type build
The Solution

Fine Mesh, Full Coverage, and a Fit You Can Set

Start with the fabric, because that is what decides whether the small stuff gets through. The body is an extra-fine 350D “window screen” nylon mesh, fine enough to keep even the tiniest gnats off your horse while still moving air — rated Best Insect Protection in our fly lineup against small to medium-sized insects, with a 40% UV protection rating over the topline. Greenheads and horse flies can still sting through a fabric this soft. If those are the ones ruining your turnout, this is not the weave for it.

The bellyband carries that mesh where a surcingle sheet cannot. It closes under the barrel and holds the fabric flush against the underside — the part of your horse insects find first and the part most sheets leave open.

Up front, the VTEK® Wither Relief fit and our original Adjusta-Fit® system are built for low to moderate-withered horses, so you can set the neck opening for his width and head carriage instead of settling for the nearest notch. The sheet contours to his body rather than bridging over it.

SilverTek® antibacterial nylon lines the chest, shoulders, and tail flap. Reflective stripes add visibility in low light or night turnout, and detachable elastic leg straps are included. Backed by a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects, from a family business making horsewear since 1948.

"I got this fly sheet last year. He doesn't sweat in it, it fits him perfectly to his size. When it rains a little bit, he is dry and so is the sheet. I believe he likes it as well because he doesn't feel hot."

Two Systems, One Mission — Because Horses Aren't Identical

Schneider engineered both the V-Free® and VTEK® wither relief systems because no single geometry works for every horse's anatomy — and they were committed to solving wither rub for the full spectrum of breeds their customers own. The VTEK® arch is constructed from a semi-rigid polycarbonate frame sewn into the back panel, creating a consistent, shape-retaining clearance arc that doesn't flatten under sheet weight over the course of a long summer day.

The Adjusta-Fit® seaming system works in conjunction with the VTEK® arch to ensure the arch itself lands in the correct spinal position for each individual horse, not just in the geometric center of the sheet's back panel. At $159.99, this represents serious engineering for a serious problem that too many horse owners have accepted as inevitable.
