The Problem

Your Horse Has a Wither. Most Blankets Don't Care.

It’s 6:15 on a cold morning, and you’re standing beside your horse at the paddock gate with a flashlight in one hand and a turnout strap in the other. The blanket looked square when you fastened it the night before. Now the neckline has pulled back against the withers, the chest is gaping, and a patch of coat near the shoulder looks flatter than it did yesterday. Before you can think about feeding or riding, you’re checking for heat, tenderness, and broken hair.

Every serious sport-horse owner knows that sinking feeling. Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods, Appendix horses, and older horses with changing toplines do not always match the proportions behind a standard blanket pattern. A size that gives your horse enough length may leave too much room through a narrow chest. Tighten the front, and the collar may bear down on prominent withers. Leave it loose, and the blanket can shift as your horse walks, grazes, plays, or rolls during turnout.

The cost reaches beyond an untidy blanket. You spend time repositioning closures, adding makeshift padding, checking the same pressure points, and wondering whether your horse will come in comfortable and covered. If rubbing begins, the coat you carefully maintained can be damaged. If the fit restricts the shoulder, every stride may pull the blanket forward again. You may even end up buying another size or another turnout, only to discover that changing the blanket’s length did not correct its neckline or chest proportions.

Your horse is not difficult to fit because anything is wrong with their build. The problem is expecting one fixed neck opening and one general cut to accommodate every wither, shoulder angle, chest width, and topline. When the pattern does not match your horse, daily turnout turns into a cycle of adjusting, watching, and hoping the next morning looks better.
Why It Keeps Happening

One Rub Mark Can Ruin a Show Season.

The problem isn’t you, and it isn’t your horse. Careful measuring can choose the correct blanket length, but it cannot change a fixed neckline or reshape a standard collar around prominent withers and a narrow chest. When the underlying pattern is wrong, tightening another buckle rarely solves the real fit problem.

A conventional turnout can look acceptable while your horse is standing square in the barn aisle. Turnout adds motion. Your horse lowers their head to graze, reaches through the shoulder, trots across the paddock, lies down, and rolls. Each movement tests the neckline, gussets, front closure, and belly security. If the collar settles behind the mane instead of clearing the withers, movement can keep drawing the fabric toward that pressure area. If the chest opening is too wide, the blanket may shift; if it is tightened beyond the pattern’s intended fit, it may pull across the shoulders.

That creates a frustrating chain of compromises. You add padding over the withers, but the extra layer changes the fit. You move the front closure, but the blanket still slides back. You try a longer size for more room, then discover excess fabric through the chest or hindquarters. Meanwhile, every morning begins with the same inspection: Is the blanket centered? Are the leg straps free? Is the coat smooth? Is there a warm spot, broken hair, or a new rub beginning where yesterday there was none?

Eventually, the turnout becomes another piece of equipment you have to manage instead of protection you can rely on. You have measured correctly, adjusted carefully, and checked repeatedly, yet your horse’s prominent withers or narrower build still falls outside the standard pattern. The answer is not another improvised fix. It is a turnout designed around the shape you are actually trying to fit.
  • Standard collar designs press directly onto prominent withers, causing painful rub marks
  • Blankets shift and rotate overnight, leaving your horse exposed to wind and rain
  • Narrow-chested horses and young stock often fall between sizes on standard fits
  • Replacing a damaged or ill-fitting turnout every season costs far more than buying right the first time
The Solution

The ARMORFlex® Challenger II VTEK® Was Built for This Horse.

The ARMORFlex® Challenger II VTEK® approaches fit at the pattern level. Its patented VTEK® wither-relief design extends the neck opening six to eight inches onto the mane, positioning the blanket differently from a conventional collar that ends close to the withers. It is designed to relieve pressure for horses with moderate to prominent withers and upright shoulder conformation, including Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods, and Appendix horses. The extended drop and contoured shaping are intended to follow the deeper heartgirth and hindquarter profile common in these sport-horse builds.

Fit can then be refined through the patented Adjusta-Fit® neckline, which provides two inches of adjustment around the neck opening. That adjustment is especially useful for a narrow-chested horse, young stock that is still filling out, or an older horse whose topline has changed. The double-snap front includes a hook-and-loop closure assist, while extended, reinforced gussets give the shoulders room to move. Instead of asking one fixed opening to fit every build, you can adjust the neckline around your horse’s actual proportions.

Protection continues through the rest of the blanket. The outer is 1200-denier ripstop polyester with a nylon lining, and you can choose either 220-gram medium-weight or 380-gram heavyweight insulation. A bellyband provides additional coverage beneath your horse, while a stretch panel in the rear surcingle allows give with movement. Detachable elastic leg straps help stabilize the blanket, and the enlarged tail cover adds a barrier against wind and rain. Wider binding and reinforced stitching support the blanket through everyday turnout wear.

For your horse, those details are meant to create a turnout that clears the withers, accommodates the chest, and allows freer shoulder movement while staying more securely positioned. For you, the payoff is less time improvising around an unsuitable cut and more confidence that the blanket was designed for the build in front of you. The Challenger II is backed by a seven-year warranty from a family-owned equestrian company trusted since 1948.

    Trusted Since 1948

Schneiders has been making horse blankets in Chagrin Falls, Ohio since 1948. Three generations of the Schneider family have refined the fit, the fabric, and the hardware — not to chase trends, but because your horse's comfort matters and your money should go further. The V-TEK® and Adjusta-Fit® designs came from listening to riders whose Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods kept rubbing out of every other blanket on the market. Made by horse lovers, for horse lovers.
