GreenGuard Grazing Muzzle – FAQ & Fit Guide
A correct fit is essential for your horse’s comfort and safety—and to get the most out of your GreenGuard Grazing Muzzle.
This guide helps you choose the right size muzzle, adjust it properly, and get grazing off to a good start.
Fit Guide
1) Check Your Muzzle Size
Hold the muzzle over your horse’s nose with the “GreenGuard” logo facing forward.
Ensure at least 3 fingers fit between the horse’s nose and the muzzle front.
If space is too tight, consider sizing up or adding rub protector stickers.
2) Attach Muzzle to Halter
Insert all four straps through the muzzle slots from the outside in, then feed each strap through the back keeper
(each strap has both a front and back keeper for security).
Final adjustments can be made once the muzzle is placed on the horse.
3) Adjusting Angle and Fit
For an average horse, set the front strap at hole 6, the side straps at 8, and the chin strap at 10.
Once on your horse, adjust the straps so the bottom of the basket is parallel to the lips, leaving about
1/2" of space between the lips and the muzzle.
Helpful Tips
-
Avoid loopy muzzle straps: If you use leather straps to connect your grazing muzzle to your halter,
cinch them down with electrical tape to keep them breaking away unnecessarily.
-
Salt and mineral access: Horses may have a hard time using salt/mineral blocks while wearing a grazing muzzle.
We recommend setting up buckets of loose salt and minerals.
FAQ
How is GreenGuard different than other muzzles?
GreenGuard’s differentiators can be summarized in three words: breathability, durability, and freedom.
The square, tapered shape allows for more breathing room, and the open design allows a horse’s jaw to move freely inside the muzzle.
The multiple-openings design supports more natural grazing behavior by allowing the horse to choose where to graze.
Is it compatible with automatic waterers?
While horses can drink water in their muzzles, some automatic waterers have too small of an opening for the muzzle to fit.
We recommend measuring the opening of your waterer and comparing it with the size of the muzzle your horse would need.
Ensure there is space for your horse to press deep enough into the waterer to get water and enough space on the side for the corners and straps not to get hung up.
Waterer models may change over time, so double-check specs before you buy.
Auto-waterer sizing reference:
-
The largest size of GreenGuard Grazing Muzzle is Size 5 (Horse), measuring 6.25" x 6"
around the outside base and 7.5" on the diagonal (bottom surface). The muzzle tapers upward and outward from the base.
-
Ideally, the waterer opening should account for those measurements, plus 1" for clearance.

Does the muzzle work on donkeys?
Yes—GreenGuard muzzles can work for donkeys. Please make sure to accurately measure your donkey’s
nose circumference and muzzle width/bit size.
Note: Donkeys and mini donkeys may need extra safety consideration when sizing and fitting.
Due to their smaller hoof size, keep the distance between the halter noseband and the muzzle as short as possible while still ensuring a proper angle adjustment.

How tall does grass need to be to start using the muzzle safely?
Horses should be able to graze on grass that is at least 3 inches high, though an ideal height is between 4–10 inches.
As a rule of thumb, grass should be at least 3–5 inches tall before you start using the muzzle.
If grass is too short or sparse, your horse may become frustrated. If needed, let your horse practice on grass that’s a little taller or less sparse.
Monitor your horse closely and consult your veterinarian if you have concerns.
How much does the muzzle restrict intake?
Grazing muzzles typically restrict about 30%–70% of grass intake compared to grazing without a muzzle.
The amount of restriction depends on the horse’s personality and environment.
- Diet inserts can make the muzzle holes about 50% smaller.
- A leather insert can restrict about 30% more.
Does it get too hot in the summer?
GreenGuard muzzles are made of high-quality, non-toxic, food-grade polyresin and are manufactured in Europe.
Like most materials, prolonged direct sunlight can warm the muzzle. However, the increased breathing room, airflow, waterproof material,
and a horse’s constant movement while grazing help the muzzle stay much cooler than a traditional muzzle in summer conditions.
Can my horse still eat hay?
While the muzzle was not designed specifically for hay, many horses do fine eating hay through it.
You can push hay through the holes to help your horse understand how to eat through the muzzle if they struggle at first.
Combining the muzzle with a slow-feed hay net or bag may make it more challenging for your horse to eat.
Consider checking with a veterinarian or nutritionist before trying this to ensure your horse is getting enough calories to sustain a healthy lifestyle.
How does the GreenGuard Muzzle compare to a center hole muzzle?
Grass intake:
With a single-hole grazing muzzle, horses often peck at the single central hole repetitively. The multi-hole, open design of the GreenGuard muzzle
encourages horses to graze more naturally while blocking a portion of their typical intake.
Some horses may become very adept at grazing through the muzzle and may need additional restriction.
Monitoring your horse’s weight can help you determine if the muzzle is working well. Inserts and other options may be used to further customize intake.
Comfort:
The open design and breathability of the GreenGuard muzzle can be more comfortable for many horses. The muzzle should fit away from the face and
shouldn’t be touching when sized correctly. This can reduce rubs and promote breathability. The food-grade material also does not hold moisture.
