Choosing the Best Quarter Horse Show Halter and Lead

Quarter Horses typically have short heads, small ears, and a strong, rounded jaw. Choosing a halter that properly fits the Quarter horse’s unique head shape can be challenging, considering the contrast between small ears and a large rounded jaw.

A properly fitted halter should sit roughly halfway between the horse's eyes and nostrils, connecting under the horse’s jaw, behind the cheekbones, and over the ears near the poll of the head. The hardware joining the nose piece, chin strap, and cheekpiece should not press into the horse's cheekbone, and you should be able to fit two fingers between all components of the halter at all times. A halter that fits too tightly will rub, causing hair loss and sores, while a halter that fits too loosely can slip off, causing a dangerous breakaway situation.

Schneiders’ inventory of quality show halters and leads are designed with Quarter Horses in mind - never compromising on functionality or style. Browse our inventory of exceptionally rated products from the best brands in the industry backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions About Quarter Horse Show Halters

What size halter does a quarter horse need?

The halter size a Quarter Horse needs depends on three primary factors: the crown, cheeks, and nose size. The measurements are generally grouped into four main categories; weanling, yearling, small, and full. To properly measure your horse for a halter, you should

  • Measure the crown from tip to tip
  • Measure the cheek from the nose band to the crown
  • Measure the nose band from the two rings that connect the cheekpieces on either side of the head
These values may then be compared to the brand-specific sizing chart for users to determine the best size fit for their horse.
