It’s a job that we all dread: organizing the trailer tack room. We are tired from traveling, or it’s been a while since we last looked at it. But what if you could organize your trailer tack room so well that it is a one-and-done solution? You could be THAT rider at the show to be the envy of everyone else!
How to Organize a Tack Room in a Horse Trailer
Having a well-organized trailer tack room is vital to keeping you moving. Your mind needs to be on getting your horse ready for the show, the trainer, or whatever you need to do instead of digging through piles of tack and supplies to find what you need. Keeping your tack and supplies organized is important to prevent critters from getting into your gear or liquids spilling and staining things.
Utilizing Vertical Space
Wallspace is GOLD. That’s why you need to utilize all of your vertical space. It keeps your things secure and off the ground so you can see all the tack and supplies in front of your face. Pegboards are a great way to do that. You can get pegboard at most hardware stores in large sheets and are easy to install. Metal can be more expensive, but they are sturdy and can be added with strong magnets. Buy a variety of hooks, baskets, rings, and more to hang your smaller items. In addition to pegboard, you can install racks, wall hooks, shelves, and more in your trailer to maximize wall space.
Foldable and Collapsible Solutions
Foldable and collapsible solutions are a great way to organize your space. These organizational tools are often hardy enough to store your saddles and easily fold up to save space. You can even buy some extra to install when you bring home goodies from Schneiders!
Multi-Functional Racks
Trailer tack rooms are often small, so having racks that can be used for many items is a must-have. When you aren’t using the racks for one thing, you can transition it to work for another thing.
Locking Tubs
If you like to use clear tubs (we do, too!), make sure to get the ones that do not just snap on but have locking handles to keep things secure. If you store liquids in these tubs, having dividers or smaller tubs inside is a game changer.
Extra Lighting
Extra lighting in your trailer is a great way to quickly get to what you need. There are lights on the market that easily stick wherever you need them and are battery-powered, so all you need to do is tap them to brighten your room. If you decide to wire your trailer for more light, you need at least a 30 amp plug outside the tack room, a breaker inside, and a metal conduit to your outlet. A great suggestion is to create an RV hatch in the wall of the tack room and run a heavy-duty extension cord through the hatch. Consider installing a large power strip if you have a lightning source in your trailer.
Label it ALL
If you don’t have one already, buy a label maker! You never have to guess again what is in that tub or who uses what when things are neatly labeled. Label makers are economical and don’t run (like pen can).
